Definition: Industrial Engineering is a process optimization philosophy dealing with the optimization of complex processes or systems.
IE is concerned with developing, improving, implementing and evaluating integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials, analysis and synthesis, based on the use of mathematical, physical and social sciences and engineering design.
IE emphasizes mathematical quantitative methods. The field of IE gradually expanded from its original industrial (factories) roots to include any field in which technical systems are being used.
